The pedagogical concept conforms to the following motto:
Learning the first foreign language and learning to learn through fun and joy.
German and English speaking children, between the ages of five and six, attend the Pre-School. They discover exciting things about themselves, other people, nature and the world. In doing so, playing is never neglected. The children are promoted through play in the various areas of development and their phonological self-awareness, so that they are optimally prepared for the enrolment to the Deutsche Schule Pretoria.
We do justice to the individual development stages of the learners through Internal Differentiation and class sizes of a maximum of 25 learners.
The Primary School teaches according to the class teacher principle. This allows for a very flexible allocation of lesson units by the class teacher who, in principle, teaches the core subjects German, Mathematics and Social Studies or English, Mathematics and Social Studies. The learners feel “at home” in their classroom and their class teacher is their constant contact person for all school-related matters.
German is the language of instruction in the Mainstream. Therefore, one of the enrolment criteria into this branch, is sufficient knowledge of the German language. The additional enrolment to German as Second Language (DaZ) can, in certain cases, become an enrolment criteria.
English as first foreign language as well as Religion belong to the compulsory subjects. In Grade 4 English is taught on mother tongue level.
Introduction of an English branch in the 2011 school year
In the school year of 2011 the Pre-School began with the establishment of an English branch with emphasis on learning German. The curriculum follows the German Pre-School and Primary School. Language of instruction is English and the children already learn German as a Foreign Language in Pre-School.
Promote and Support
In the Primary School we want to establish a successive learning environment which does justice to the individual development phases of our learners. For this reason, a 2-hourly differentiation offer takes place, parallel to the regular lessons, as of Grade 3. Further information can be found under „Concept for Support & Promotion for the subject German“.
Good command of at least one foreign language has become a key qualification worldwide. At the Deutsche Schule Pretoria, English is therefore already taught in Pre-School during 2 lessons per week. In Grade 3 the amount of English lessons per week increases to five.
Open Full-Day Offer
In Pre-School to Grade 2, the children have 30 lessons and in Grade 3 and 4 they have 34 lessons of core lessons per week.
An additional programme is offered for all children subsequent to the core lessons. Parents can chose whether their children should play freely under the water tower until 14:10 (under supervision), do an extra-mural activity or be fetched from school.
After school ends, the Primary School learners can be enrolled in the After School Care Centre and be cared for there until 17:30. We recommend the After School care at the centre to all learners, who‘s second language is German, as they will receive additional support with their homework and learning the language.
